aune's low voltage gain meant that vs my typical setup, the autoformer pre's far reduced attenuation eclipsed my crossover's bass attenuator range. Looping the sub in was flatly out. Even at the spl's max -10dB bass cut, the passive sub on its high-gain nCore monos played far too loud. I had no secondary inline means to trim it back by another ~10dB¹. In short, the AS5 had to run solo. On an absolute performance score as set by my residents, this netted it a solid C. On the mind-blower score however—size/price vs actual sound—it was another A+ because it eliminated ~€25K of my usual stuff (crossover, main amp, sub amps, sub and their cabling). This leads us to the intended takeaway. Even in a room this size to warrant higher SPL, aune's AS5 is surprisingly capable. Sure, an experienced hifi mixologist could make equivalent sound with the usual separates and passive boxes. I might pick a €2'500 Simon Lee i5 integrated and €1'875/pr Amphion Argon 3X. Not only would this increase the buy-in. For someone with less or no hifi experience, it could involve trial 'n' error before one arrives at a happy combo. Perhaps more even than cost savings, that strikes me as this aune's primary appeal and accomplishment. Out of the box we get an expertly tuned compact system of guaranteed mature performance. Because the actual ask is so modest compared to the classic separate-amp/passive-speaker approach, we nab the priceless benefits of hard experience for practically free. Not only do we get to enjoy the sound of costly experience for very little. We get to do so now! Shake. Stir. Swallow. Be instantly smart. Skip years worth of hifi schooling.

¹ This warrants a longer explanation. Active subs like my Zu Method offer a very broad range of gain adjustments to accommodate speakers of wildly divergent sensitivities. My sound|kaos sub meanwhile is passive. My chosen amps for it are fixed-gain 700W/4Ω nCore monos, one per 15-inch woofer. Versus my usual speaker's sensitivity and the gain of its own amplifier, my spl crossover's bass attenuator sits at 0. That's precisely midway between its outer -10/+10dB end points. With aune's low voltage gain demanding far higher input voltage off the source (far less signal cut in my autoformer passive), spl's -10dB max cut fell way short. I probably needed a -20dB option if not a bit more. That was simply a peculiarity of this particular setup. Standard active subs will build in selectable input sensitivity to accommodate the adjustments necessary for the AS5.

There's more. If this is how one starts out, it blueprints a well-informed future. aune's mature tuning focuses on what actually matters for satisfied listening. It bypasses the FX which can send so many of us on a golden-goose chase spanning years even decades. That's not the same as saying more isn't possible. It most certainly is. The challenge is simply that for every extra we might bolt on—more micro detail, air, dynamics, separation etc.—chances multiply that the core satisfaction which aune built in so cleverly diminishes. To be sure, it need not. Experience merely suggests growing likelihood and with it, fewer instances of easy successes. This learning curve and its associated sell'n'buy cycles define many an audiophile career. If that's how you identify, tally ho. Go forth, prosper and keep our little industry ticking over. The innocuous modest AS5 is an effective early offramp for those who neither have the time, money, inclination nor appetite. It nails all the essentials in ideal proportions and suits the desktop and smaller TV/audio systems as is. It even scales up unexpectedly with an active high pass and mirror-imaged sub. It's quiet as the proverbial church mouse to emit zero self noise. Its omnivorous tuning decommissions the need for sound-first music curation which has many advanced audiophiles shrink their playlists to remain pleasant on their über-explicit hyper-critical rigs. In short, aune's first speaker is an object lesson in well-built SimpliFi. Though anything but cheesy, cheerful it most undeniably is. Against our high-end's inflationary trends into the luxury market, offerings like today's confirm that alternatives in the entry level do continue unabated. We must just know about them before we can seek them out. On that score, today even Amazon is our friend.

aune AS5. It's for real. It's available now. It's everything its ingredients and concept promised; and quite possibly more. Discovery. Made.
