I reviewed quite a lot of cables over the years. Whilst not super-expensive, many music lovers would still call them an extravagance. Instead of buying 'audiophile' cables, they instead chose generic wire from a nearby electronics emporium. What if you could afford better for just a little more? Let me introduce you to Melodika's Sky Blue Series interconnect and speaker cables. 15-20 years ago, a hifi rule of thumb was to allocate no more than 10% of your budget on cables. Back then cables were considered a necessary evil at best and treated as such. You couldn't do without but nobody saw any reason to spend a considerable amount. Today many if not most audiophiles know cables to be more important. They are prepared to spend significantly more than 20 years ago. The problem is that while the general audio industry transitioned from home appliances to luxury goods, so did cables. While we can still buy decently priced electronics, headphones and speakers, cable pricing even for entry-level lines from renowned brands often start disproportionately high. To be clear, many are more technologically advanced and feature solutions and materials that had to first be developed. That costs money; hence steeper prices.

Cables today are better at doing what they're supposed to do, namely as little as possible in terms of influencing the signal. Their job is to protect the signal from external interference, introduce no distortion and transmit without losses. That's nearly impossible. Still, manufacturers keep trying and some come closer than others. That's why audiophile cables cost – sometimes too much. It's why shallower wallets often invest most of the budget in electronics and transducers then get generic leashes from a local hardware store or Amazon. Today is about showing that if you're willing to spend just a bit more, you may do much better, meaning your electronics and speaker will perform better than you thought. That's where Melodika steps in. This Polish brand debuted 16 years ago. It was established by audio distributor RAFKO led by Mr. Rafał Koc who, while working with his customers, recognized an unmet demand for inexpensive yet good-quality audio cables.

"The history of Melodika is a story about how passion, knowledge and experience can transform into real actions. The roots of the brand date back to 2010 when the brand's founder, together with a team of professionals passionate about music and dealing with hifi gear, concluded that he and other audiophiles were lacking solutions that not only ensured very good audio-video signal transmission but also durability and functionality while keeping price reasonable. Was this biting off more than we could chew? A kind of mission impossible? If we thought so, Melodika would never have come to be." As Mr. Koc told me: "As a Polish brand manufacturing in Poland since 2010, we have consistently built Melodika around engineered reliability and transparency. We focus on proven technical solutions and avoid unnecessary elements or embellishments, allowing the product to speak for itself." The first line from 2011 was named Purple "in a characteristic purple colour. The goal was simple: to manufacture in Poland and give customers as much as possible for the price." The line still sells today. Even after an unavoidable price increase, 15 years later a €53 sticker for a pair of 0.5m RCA interconnects seems ridiculous because they are not rebranded generics from the Far East but developed and manufactured in Poland. It's the kind of pricing that could convince someone on a budget to buy and stay clear of a no-name brand from a mass merchant selling washing machines and shavers.

While the development of the audio cable range continued, Melodika introduced their first loudspeakers in 2013 like the BL40 floorstander which I reviewed and appreciated especially when they were as attractively priced as the cables. 2017 witnessed the first in-wall speakers, another range that has expanded since. Today, six lines include not only analogue cables (interconnects, phono, speaker and in-wall) but digital (including USB) and power. Basically, one can purchases all cables needed for almost any system from one of Melodika's lines. Only their top Brown Suger hits a price where some other brands start. One of the lines called PRO is intended for recording studios. "Melodika cables are manufactured in Poland with a strong focus on quality, consistency and attention to detail at every stage of production. We combine high-quality materials, advanced production methods, modern machines and carefully selected technologies to deliver reliable performance and a high standard of workmanship. As a local company, we remains firmly rooted in the Polish and European economy."
