For a few years Ivette and I lived in Taos, New Mexico. As we were fond of saying, people in that region were not afraid of colour. Ivette's visual senses were inspired by that as you'll appreciate here. Whilst in Taos, she worked at the University of New Mexico with remedial students from troubled families. She even applied for a teaching position at the Taos Pueblo only to afterwards learn that a small-print requirement for the job was fluidity in Tiwa, the tribe's native tongue. Obviously only a native could fulfil that requirement. But by opening up that position to the public at large, the pueblo could avail themselves of US government grants. It's how honesty of intention can run afoul of institutional corruption.
