Below is the Eastern entrance to Chardonne's Rue du Village - or main street to expat Yanks.

From above Chardonne's cemetery, one readily sees the tri-spoked headquarters of the Nestle Corporation in Vevey; incidentally a major sponsor of Rabten Choeling.

The Vevey/Mont-Pelerin funiculair is a quaint, fully automated cable trolley with a steeply stepped cabin whose floor incline mirrors the uphill path through the vineyards - save for when it docks in the shallower Vevey station where it stops in quite the tilt.

Two cabins operate in opposition on a single rail and, for a very brief spell, meet in the middle's two-lane pass. Watching this the first time wondering whether they'll be timed just right to avoid each other, it helps to remember that the Swiss invented precision. And, that this cable car has been running for a long time.

If you're a bicyclist with - er, ill-earned downhill aspirations, take the cabin all the way to the final station and enjoy a killer rush down the mountain. Preferably with working brakes.
