Conclusion.
With their D line, NAD look courageously to the future on both tech and cosmetics. That’s particularly so for the D 7050 which shuns all analog inputs. Instead it piles on high with support for all manner of digital sources and adds superior wireless with Airplay, Bluetooth and UPnP streaming to support Spotify & Co.

Its compact unconventional form factor nearly gets lost in a standard hifi rack but set upright turns eye catcher next to an Apple iMac where it underscores departure from traditional hifi even more. Luckily this didn’t impact its sonic virtues. In those disciplines it remains a typical NAD with the firm’s taut lower mids and bass that play it wiry and well sorted. Perhaps it’s not really "the hifi system of the 21st century" as NAD’s brochure would have it but without a doubt it is a sonically respectable, ultra-modern well-appointed easy-to-use heart of such a system.

Psych profile of the NAD D 7050…
• surprisingly massive quite extended bass foundation that’s dry as dust and cleanly structured.
• a natural well-nuanced midband free of artifacts but with body. Voices appear against a black background. Here it is slightly more neutral and as such a tad cooler than NAD’s Classics.
• the treble is slightly soft without missing important facts or venue data. This voicing embraces compromised fare like lossy compressed streaming services offer up.
• the stage action is quite compact but not overly narrow. This doesn’t affect image focus or localization precision.
• involving musicality, coherence and good macro and micro dynamics make for a lot of listening fun that won’t get boring a few hours later.
• whilst overall staging is somewhat compact, the unraveling of dense passages happens without losses. Even complex arrangements are finely teased out without getting vivisectionist to step out of the musical flow.
