The Quad II-eighty’s handling of bass frequencies did not stray from the confines of the ‘valve sound’. Bass guitar -- stand-up or electric -- had a bloom that to solid-state adherents might sound a little overripe and less punchy. Having said that, our difficult-to-control Wilsons as commanded by the Quads  were still able to satisfy our bass cravings. Sure, well-recorded kick drum did not sock my gut with impact. The Quads are rather more rounded in their bass presentation yet nevertheless still quite powerful sounding. The lower registers are more along the lines of a comfortable and satisfyingly sensory Rolls Royce ride than a fast and visceral Lamborghini. For the latter perspective you’ll need to seek out philosophically opposing designs along the lines of megawatt solid-state beasts. They’ll have a tighter control of the bass to be sure but I’d be willing to bet they’ll lack the midrange and top-end magic the Quad design excels at.

Conclusion
Here in the II-eighty is a revamped and re-engineered version of an amplifier with an enviable heritage, the Quad II. Tim De Paravicini has taken the classic Peter Walker design and while modernising the assembly and cosmetics, has elevated power output and updated its sonic qualities. Effectively, De Paravicini has retained the legacy midrange magic but improved the overall sonics and physical package to an extent that would make Peter Walker proud. With the Quad II-eighty, excellence has truly become immortal.
