So what’s the score card say thus far? Microdynamic reflexes, ultra-transparent mids and brilliant cohesion on tone and timing. What still belongs is soundstaging. First off I couldn’t say this floorstander stages less freely than a good compact monitor. Nothing sticks to the columns and with minimal setup effort the music simply floats in space. Pleasant, that. The virtual stage begins where it mostly does – on the line between the boxes. Depending on recording it then veers believably far back in layers. Speakers with more ultrasonic content may stage deeper, higher or taller (whether those qualities are artificial or not I leave for you to decide) but the Fun 13 doesn’t merely sort well and locates things convincingly, sounds acquire body and dimension. Particularly in the vocal range this approaches aficionado levels!

Conclusion. The Blumenhofer Fun 13 is a seemingly tallish speaker column which acoustically nonetheless belongs more into the class of short towers or compact monitors. The small print thus says no infrasonic orgies, no macrodynamic wonders. Think aesthete, not rock star. If you can do without max values in said disciplines and needn’t energize a hangar, the Fun 13 becomes a sonically brilliant and affordable solution. At least I was particularly impressed by the smallest Blumenhofer’s coherently well-timed play, the ultra-transparent vocal range andits very realistic staging.

Psych profile
.
  • By design deep bass is limited and the opposite extreme is slightly defensive and not particularly airy. The tonal balance is nevertheless expertly set, coherent and more sonorous than bright.
  • On quantity there are no miracles in the low end. On quality all is good – utterly seamless integration with the midband, immediate, quick and wiry are those lower registers which are covered.
  • The treble is clean and grainless but tuned for long-term comfort rather than excitement.
  • The midband is ultra resolved and quasi naked. This combines extreme magnification power with a minor penchant for tonal warmth. This midrange resolution isn’t merely impressive for the price but in general a true forté. Lyrical intelligibility is very high.
  • Microdynamics are very agile, macrodynamics have obvious limitations.
  • Properly set up this speaker disappears and stages very believably. The soundstage begins on the speaker line, i.e. is neither forward nor recessed and exhibits realistic dimensions. Localization assignment is solid. Instruments and particularly voices are pleasingly embodied.
