On top more gleam and shine are possible. Here too the Teufel walks with care but this becomes only apparent by direct contrast with something else so is mentioned merely to be complete. I never felt shortchanged but by the same token this speaker never got intense about its high end. Another forté next to macrodynamic stability, coherent timing and naturally fulsome tonal balance was soundstaging. Here taste becomes the determinant. First off there's no cause for concern that tones would stick to the boxes despite a total of five drivers. One needn't sit unusually far before those play as one. 2.5-3m suffice. Here again the coax plays an ace card. Its position one meter above ground, i.e. one or two hand's widths higher than the norm, means that performers stand up rather than sit down. The perspective raises a bit.

As it ought to for its size, foremost the Definion 5 casts quite generous virtual space. In my room I enjoyed a rather wide panorama. There was no reservation or restraint and projection occurred slightly in front rather than behind the speaker, just right for my taste. On depth layering I was satisfied as well. Here the Def5 is middle of the road. Some go deeper, others less deep. My Thiel monitor doesn't go fundamentally farther but still registers differently.

That's probably because image focus is more pointed, compact and tangible to create higher onstage transparency. There's more visibility into the farther reaches. Ditto for the Ascendo C6. Localization sharpness with the Definition 5 is quite good but not a core concern. What makes this all'rounder special are PRaT, macrodynamics, shove and power. But that was already apparent from the go.

Hence the ideal room shouldn't be too small nor the amp too flat-chested. Career quiet listeners with predominantly chamber music in their stacks have better alternatives. If you want a lively party-approved speaker on the full rather than anaemic side of the fence with plenty of energetic fast bass, you might have hit gold. In its price range the Definion 5 exhibits no real weakness. It's a do-everything choice with taut timing and high foot-tapping factor. That fit'n'finish are first rate with a 12-year warranty and eight weeks of in-home privilege are the cream on this shot of Baileys.

Psych profile for the Teufel Definion 5...
• This speaker's tonal balance veers slightly into the powerful and sonorous.
• For a box its size bass extension isn't grand but there isn't much missing either. The mid and upper bass exhibit a minor emphasis. The impulsive behavior in the low registers is brilliant, with steep sudden attacks and no smear. Here the sealed loading pays off. On bass color differentiation more remains possible.
• The midband drifts a bit into warmth which is a sum of the potent upper bass and slightly restrained presence region.
• The treble integrates seamlessly and comes across linear if mildly defensive. This avoids all hardness but also gold records in resolution and airiness. A good average for this class.
• Staging is quite opulent on width whilst depth is good but not special. Sounds don't stick at all and the general perspective is forward of the speakers. Image focus is good but elsewhere pursued with more precision and space around the performers.
• Dynamics particularly in the macro domain are a key attraction. The Definion is also highly SPL stable but requires a minimum volume to play to its strengths.
• The speaker majors on PRaT, pep and power. Music gets propulsive and lively. For many listeners that'll carry the day.
