Each loudspeaker is a set of design choices and compromises. Such small and—considering build and finish quality—relatively inexpensive cabinets are affected by the laws of Physics even more than most. That makes the personality and vision of the designer, his personal sonic signature, so vital. Serblin's design might not be as old as the BBC LS3/5A, the precursor of the P3ESR, but it surely is no longer any novelty. If we look at it from this perspective we appreciate how certain things in the audio business were invented a long time ago while at present many manufacturers struggle to keep up with prior accomplishments.


The tweeter in the Minima Vintage is outstanding and key to its great sound. The design, cosmetics and  spectacular sound create a truly extraordinary proposal for customers who must remember only one limitation – the speakers’ small size. Although they are different than the Harbeth, EBTB and RLS, they belong to the same group of products that allied with proper electronics and placed in a properly sized room will fulfil almost any dream of their owner. ‘Almost’ makes a difference but in this particular case it isn’t large.


Description: The reissue of the Sonus Faber Minima called Vintage looks almost identical to its predecessor. These are really small monitors measuring 200 x 330 x 275mm WxHxD including the speaker binding posts. It's a two-way design with a rear-firing port. It's the cabinet that distinguishes them from other speakers by being made of precisely matched beautifully finished solid Walnut staves with curved edges and leathered front and back panels. The leather is supposed to help damp midrange resonances and disperse high frequencies. At the bottom you will find T-nuts to place or bolt the speakers to stands. The company’s own are highly recommended.


The tweeter’s mounting plate is almost as big as the mid/woofer. It’s a 28mm ferrofluid-cooled silk dome. The mid/woofer is a 120mm cellulose/acrylate cone with vented basked. The latter’s round shape is a bit different from the original. Sonus Faber says that both drivers are Danish but have been modified to their requirements. The tweeter is in fact a legendary Esotar Dynaudio T-330 and the mid/woofer is made by Skanning’s Audio Technology with their special Hexacoil. There are only single binding posts made exclusively for Sonus Faber with their logo and special shape. The crossover network is a first order set at 2kHz.
