Description: The Audio Academy Phoebe IIIs are two-way floorstanding bass reflex loudspeakers. The tweeter is the 27 TBC/GTV SEAS and the mid/woofer Visaton's 170mm W170S. The tweeter consists of an aluminum-magnesium alloy diaphragm mated to a paper cone that’s been coated with a resonance-absorbing compound. The Visaton is equipped with a medium-size magnet and inexpensive die-cast basket.
Below it sits the port. At the back there are single gold-plated binding posts but the space between them as dictated by the terminal plate is too narrow. I think Audio Academy could issue an upgrade kit—a special edition perhaps—to offer a nicely engraved aluminum plate with WBT binding posts. They could also add better internal wiring, better spikes and so on. Another option could be an upgraded crossover with point-to-point wiring, better resistors and coils.
The cost of such an upgrade would be significant, most likely not much lower than the price of the speakers at present but worth it I think. The cabinets are MDF and strengthened with cross braces.
The interior is damped with thick felt mats fitted to the sidewalls, top, behind the mid/woofer and some also to the bottom of the enclosure. The crossover sits on a printed circuit board screwed down to a small MDF block which is glued to the back wall behind the Visaton. There are polypropylene capacitors from Philips and inductors. The hookup wiring is OFC. There is a very nice natural veneer on the outside and the speakers are equipped with a black plinth a bit wider on the front than the speaker’s cross section. They stand on brass spikes with round ends and grills are standard.
